🎉 Celebrating 5-years of Open Source Blockchain Development
On February 4, 2018, I posted my first technical tutorial video for building smart contracts on Ethereum.
This initial video was inspired by my family. As a father of triplet teenagers, they hold me accountable to ensuring that I treat them similarly and fairly. To address this, did I have an open-hearted sit-down dialogue where I explained how the financial needs of each of them may vary over time, and as a family, we will debate and coordinate these decisions at a weekly family meeting?
No, I did not. I wrote a smart contract.
A Trustless Trust
The video shows how to create an automated, living trust that guarantees that each child receives an equal amount. It is a simple smart contract with a purpose of educating a diverse (technical and legal) audience about the types of use cases smart contracts can handle.
Deposits can be made by anyone, and when one of the beneficiaries requests a withdrawal, each beneficiary receives exactly the same amount. This autonomously and cryptographically guarantees fair treatment, eliminating any whining or belly-aching from a disgruntled triplet that a sibling received something they did not.
It’s mostly just fun use case to become part of my Ethereum development training course.
Although small in number and void of entertaining content, the videos on the feed show a journey of open source blockchain development from Ethereum to EOSIO to Polkadot, with plenty of Bitcoin throughout.
Five Full Years
I am thankful to have had the opportunity to build open source freedom-loving software for the last five years, and I hope to be blessed to celebrate again in 2028.
Thank you to all of my clients, supporters, colleagues, and friends. 🙏
